Mufasa realizes that the little hornbill is useful after all and appoints him as the royal adviser. Zazu finds a tree trunk that Mufasa drags over to the pit, allowing Sarabi to climb out. But Mufasa can't find a way to rescue Sarabi. Zazu flies back to tell Mufasa who leaps up and runs to the gorge. Zazu flies over to where the vultures are anyway and sees that Sarabi has fallen into a pit and can't get out. He asks Mufasa if he wants him to fly over and see what's happening, but Mufasa is not concerned and lies down for a nap. One day, Zazu notices some vultures hovering. Mufasa quickly gets tired of this as Zazu disturbs his hunts and his private time with his betrothed Sarabi. Zazu follows Mufasa around and watches over him.
Zazu is thankful and hopes that he can be of service to the future Lion King someday. In the book Friends in Need, Young Zazu is about to be cooked and eaten by the three young hyenas (which explains his cry of "Oh, no! Not the birdie boiler!" in the first movie) Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, when an adolescent Mufasa comes along, frightens off the hyenas and saves him. I used a darker blue feather boa for around the neck for extra flair! To complete the look, I made simple elastic waist pants out of some brightly colored African print material. Lastly, I used plain white ribbon to trim around the edges of the poncho and the bottoms of the tail feathers. I attached a small elastic “loop” on each side of the “wing” so that actor could put his fingers through the loops and have something to hold on to when he spread his wings. I sewed all the regular sized feathers around the poncho and sewed the 3 larger feathers in the back for the tail. I also made 3 larger feathers for the tail. I surged the two sides of the feathers together (you could use a zig-zag stitch if you don’t have a serger). Next I cut out approximately 64 feather shapes out of two different contrasting materials a front material that you’ll mostly see and a back side of the feather that you will only get glimpses of when he moves or flaps his wings. I found the center and cut out a small hole for the head. I then used white, gray and black felt to cut out the eyes and eyebrow shapes and I hot glued those onto the cap on each side of the beak.įor Zazu’s costume, I cut out a large poncho, roughly in the shape of a square. I centered it on the front of the cap and sewed it on. Next, I cut out a beak shape out of orange fleece, sewed it and stuffed it with ordinary polyester stuffing. I serged the bottom of the cap so that it wouldn’t roll up or under, and I sewed the top of the cap. I started by making a generic “skull cap” out of blue fleece, to fit my actor’s head (it’s about 22 inches around). Zazu’s headpiece was made entirely out of material. One dark blue feather boa Enough plain white ribbon to go around your poncho and the tail feathers Material for simple capri-length pants Orange socks, white canvas shoes, orange dye The tail feathers were about twice the size of the regular feathers.
My feathers were 8″ long by 4″ wide and the two sides are serged together.
My costume used 32 feathers and 3 larger tail feathers. The number of feathers you need will depend on how large your poncho is.
